| The Diploma in Applied Gerontology (Counseling) program is designed to equip students with the ability to provide quality care for the elderly, and dealing with conflicts and how to resolve them. Students gained a broad understanding of the social, medical and economic aspects of ageing and learn practical skills and knowledge in working with older persons (see Testimonies). Substantial areas covered include demographic profile and trends, theoretical and developmental perspectives in ageing, social issues and national policies, working with the elderly and their families, intergenerational relationships, support services and current trends. |
Those directly engaged in social service delivery for older persons in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors will find this diploma program relevant and gives them additional competence in the field. The program is also suited for those who want an exposure to the field of ageing and wish to work with older persons. It is especially beneficial for people who wish to prepare themselves for later years or who are primary care-givers.
* This diploma may not qualify anyone to set up a private counseling practice. Employment is solely at the discretion of the employer. |
| This is a 10-month part time program with once-a-week lectures from 7pm to 10pm, totaling 120 contact hours. Extra field work will be required as and when the need arises. |
| Members of the teaching staff are drawn from experienced and qualified practitioners. The course work includes lectures, case studies, discussions and written assignments. You are also required to do a large part of your study in your own time. |
