Overview:
Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speaker of Other Languages
(TESOL) is a short intensive course that offers basic training in teaching
English to speakers of other languages. Participants will be given a
brief introduction to techniques of classroom management and
assessment, and a more thorough introduction to presentation
techniques, lesson preparation and analysing language for
communicative purposes. The course is highly practical and a major
emphasis will be practice teaching. Participants will work collaboratively
to prepare and teach lessons, progressing to taking sole responsibility
for a two-hour lesson.
The teaching practice module will be delivered through a combination
of workshops, lesson observation and lesson delivery. In workshops
there may be some micro teaching of peers, but the bulk of this module
will be delivered in the context of classes of ESL/EFL learners at
beginner, post-beginner and intermediate levels.
Participants in the Certificate IV course currently include:
- people who wish to teach overseas
- qualified teachers who wish to add EFL/ESL teaching skills to
enhance their opportunities for teaching in both schools and post
secondary institutions
- qualified teachers who wish to improve their English teaching skills
The Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speaker of Other Languages
(TESOL) is recognised by the National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme
(NEAS) as a minimum qualification for teaching in an ELICOS program
or a DIMA funded program in Australia. It is considered equivalent to
the Cambridge/RSA Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults
(CELTA), which is recognised internationally as a qualification for
teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and teaching English
as a Second Language (TESL) throughout the world.
